Gold Mounted ‘lucky bone’ of a Tiger
( England
1800 to 1900
)
|
Medium
Bone and Gold
|
Literature:
These ‘lucky bones’ are the clavicles of lions and tigers. The collar bones of the cat family have been reduced over time to tiny vestigial structures. In India those of the tiger were prized as amulets and believed to possess magical qualities. In the late 19th century they were highly regarded by big game hunters, and many were sent to the firm of the taxidermist Edward Gerrard & Sons to be mounted in gold and were then worn as souvenirs of a successful hunt.
