An early nineteenth century cigar case, obverse with portrait of wreathed Julia Grisi (born 28.7.1811, died 29.11.1869); one of the most famous Italian Sopranos of the first half of the 19th century, making her debut at the age of 17 in Rossini's Zelmira. In 1830, Bellini composed the role of Giulietta in I Capuletti e i Montecchi expressly for Grisi's talents. She also sang the role of Adalgisa in the world premiere performance of Bellini's Norma and later went on to become one of the most important Normas ever.
