Fine engine turned lignum vitae table snuff box. The lid decorated with intertwined circles with a border of chip carved rope and an interlaced gothic ached border. This form of decoration became the special pride of 16th and 17th century wood turners and was the aristocrat of lathe products.

From the 17th century when the taking of snuff became fashionable snuff boxes of man forms were made and often form exotic materials of which lignum vitae is a fine example. From he Latin, tree of life, lignum vitae is heartwood of a genus of graiacum guayacan, three times a hard as oak, from the Magnolia family which is a native of Jamaica, the West Indies and the Americas.
