Horn snuff box engraved I.E. and dated 1741.
Oval in form with domed lid which opens with copper hinge and brass catch.The border engraved with triple reed and the base also domed.

The taking of snuff, as opposed to smoking tobacco in a pipe, became popular with the well to do in the early 18th century and was taken by both men and women of fashion. Queen Anne and Queen Charlotte developed a penchant, as did Alexander Pope, Charles Darwin and the Duke of Wellington. The craze gradually spread to all classes and the boxes in which it was held varied from the elaborate to the utilitarian. Often initialled, illustrated and dated they were make in a wide variety of materials from gold & silver, brass & copper, tortoiseshell, rare and beautiful woods, papier mache and horn.
