Description / Expertise
A most superb table from the first quarter of the 19th Century. Essentially a ladies work table but with incredibly rare all over pen work decoration. The oblong top with two drop flaps with a single drawer and sliding work bag under, and raised on a platform base with four splay shaped legs and gilded lions paw feet. The three oval panels to the top depict sculptures by Bernini (1598-1680), the single most important artistic talent of the Italian Baroque. From the left: Neptune & Triton, The Farnese Bull and St. Mathew. Further imagery abounds including birds, putti, musical instruments, masks & grape & vine decoration. It is likely that this table was commissioned as a reminder of the sights and travels on the Grand Tour. George III circa 1810.
