A brown lacquered tokuri (saké flask), the core probably of dry lacquer, decorated with a simple rain dragon in brown, black and gold takamakie and a fly on the shoulder.
We had at first assumed that the reference in the inscription was to a bamboo core, but the shape and weight suggest otherwise. The lacquer artist Tomizo Saratani is sure that it is made of dry lacquer (kanshitsu), an ancient and now uncommon technique. This would make the allusion to a bamboo loving old artist at once more poetic and baffling.
There are numerous works by this most talented of students of Shibata Zeshin in the Baur Collection, Geneva. Many are illustrated in the exhibition catalogue "Ferns Feathers Flowers", 2001.
