Description / Expertise
An Exceptional Pair of Sevres Style Porcelain Vases And Covers With Exhibition Quality Bronze Mounts And Gilding. Inscribed on the inside of one cover 'Offert pour le prince de Rohan a la princess de Lamballe'.
The scenes depict members of the nobility from the court of Marie Antoinette. Princess de Lamballe was one of her closest confidantes, one of just a chosen few within a tight clique that were rewarded with expensive gifts and positions, at the expense of others. The socially prominent Prince de Rohan, the Cardinal of France, was unhappy over his years of exclusion from this inner circle. His attempts to win favour brought about the infamous 'Diamond Necklace Affair', which grabbed the attention of the entire nation in the 1780s, as tales of the queen's extravagance, dissipation and sexual vice abounded. The trial that followed and Rohans acquittal on the charge of insulting the Queen damaged the Monarchy's reputation irreparably.
