Queen Anne longcase clock

DANIEL QUARE (1649-1724)
Queen Anne longcase clock ( England c. 1700 )

Medium
walnut brass
Description / Expertise
An important Queen Anne longcase clock of one month duration. The magnificent case is veneered with burr walnut with herringbone inlay to the base and trunk door. There is a double plinth to the base and a typical
Quare caddy top mounted with three gilt wood finials. The hood door is flanked by veneered columns with bold brass capitals.

The 12ins square dial is mounted with turban head and foliage spandrels, a silvered chapter ring, seconds ring and calendar aperture. The chapter ring is signed by the maker.

The high quality month duration movement includes an anchor escapement and rack striking with the hours sounded on a bell. The clock is complete with its original pendulum and brass cased weights.

Daniel Quare was a worthy contemporary of Thomas Tompion. Born in 1647 he was admitted as a Brother of the Clockmakers’ Company in 1671 and served as Master in 1708. Towards the latter part of his career he went into partnership with Stephen Horseman who had been apprenticed to him. When Daniel Quare died in 1724, Horseman carried on the business until 1733.
