Description / Expertise
A fine and well proportioned, Queen Anne, longcase clock by Thomas Cartwright, London, in circa
1705. The case is veneered with walnut with inset panels of bird and floral marquetry against an
ebony ground and is complete with caddy top and three gilt finials. It has achieved wonderful
colour and patination.
The 12ins square dial with applied chapter ring, seconds ring and well pierced hands. The centre
finely matted with an aperture to view the day of the month.
The hours are sounded on a bell via a countwheel.
Thomas Cartwright was apprenticed to Christopher Gould. He worked in Royal Exchange and
later became Clockmaker to King George I.
